One month for the ocean: How Alten engaged its teams with the Ocean Challenge

Our news

What if, for one month, every everyday action became a concrete step to protect the ocean and the environment as a whole?

That was the challenge Alten took on in September 2025 with the launch of the Ocean Challenge: a collective, engaging and fun experience designed to raise employees' awareness and, above all, inspire them to take action.

An Immersive Challenge Embedded in Everyday Life

For one month, employees embarked on a digital journey through the Energic app.

Every day, they could:

Throughout the experience, one common thread tied everything together: all educational content was developed by Surfrider Foundation Europe, helping participants better understand the connections between our lifestyles, our health, and the health of the ocean.

An International Collective Effort

The challenge brought together employees from several countries, divided into four teams:

Available in both French and English, the Ocean Challenge united employees across borders and fostered a strong sense of collective engagement.

Overcoming the Traditional Barriers to Employee Engagement

Many organizations face the same challenges when rolling out sustainability awareness initiatives:

The Ocean Challenge addresses these issues with practical solutions:

A format accessible anywhere : Available on mobile, the challenge enables participation from both field teams and office-based employees, regardless of where they work.

An experience employees actively take part in : Rather than simply receiving information, participants experiment, play, learn and take action—making key messages more memorable and meaningful.

Actionable data in real time :  Participation rates, completed actions, ideas submitted and team engagement all provide valuable insights that help identify the most effective levers for future initiatives. A comprehensive impact report is delivered at the end of the challenge.

The result is a shift from simple awareness campaigns to measurable employee engagement.

Play and learn

To keep motivation high, the challenge featured both individual and team leaderboards.

Individual ranking, the top three participants received Surfrider prizes:

Teams also competed collectively, encouraging collaboration and mutual motivation. A simple yet highly effective gamification system helped transform engagement into lasting habits.

Results That Speak for Themselves

In just one month, employees enthusiastically embraced the challenge.

Behind these figures lies something even more meaningful: growing awareness translated into concrete action.

 "Simple, Fun... and Transformative"

Participants particularly appreciated the format.

"This challenge taught me interesting facts and gave me new ideas for reducing my environmental footprint."

"The masterclass on the textile industry was incredibly insightful."

"The app's challenges were simple, fun, and really helped me understand the impact of our consumption habits and how we can do better."

"Thank you for this fantastic challenge. I enjoyed every mission and learned so much. I can't wait to join more initiatives like this!"

These testimonials reinforce a key takeaway: meaningful engagement grows through positive, accessible, and practical experiences.

Practical Ideas That Can Transform the Workplace

The challenge also generated actionable ideas through Energic's built-in idea box, where employees could submit and vote for proposals.

Encourage Sharing

Create a dedicated space where employees can leave items they no longer need, such as office supplies, books or everyday objects, for colleagues to reuse.

 Promote Sustainable Mobility

Strengthen incentives for public transport, carpooling, and active mobility options such as cycling.

Reduce Energy Consumption

Install occupancy sensors and automate lighting systems to reduce unnecessary energy use.

A Proven Approach

The Ocean Challenge builds on a methodology that has already demonstrated its effectiveness across several organizations.

The program was first deployed at EPSA in 2021, engaging 500 employees.

In March 2022, a tailored version was launched with Bouygues Telecom, bringing together 1,500 active participants out of 10,000 employees, from headquarters to operational centers, demonstrating its ability to engage diverse audiences at scale.

Later that year, EcoCO2 also mobilized its 100 employees through the same format.

In 2025, the program entered a new phase through a partnership with Energic, a social enterprise specializing in gamification since 2015, bringing recognized expertise and a robust digital platform.

These experiences demonstrate the flexibility and scalability of the Ocean Challenge across a wide range of organizational contexts.

A Journey That Is Only Just Beginning

With the Ocean Challenge, Alten has done more than launch a one-off awareness campaign.

The company is laying the foundations for long-term change by fostering the following:

Because meaningful transition doesn't happen through declarations alone it happens together through everyday actions.
